Southern Health's choice for water hygiene services

Water safety risk assessmewnrts and testing for Southern Health is undertaken by Airmec

Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust has once again awarded its Water Hygiene Services tender, to include water safety risk assessments and water sampling, to Airmec Essential Services. The current contract lasts into 2026.

Airmec is an independent expert in water hygiene services, working with healthcare companies like Southern Health to manage the risks of Legionella and Pseudomonas through regular water safety testing. For the past four years Airmec has helped the Trust manage and audit water compliance processes cost-effectively, working across the Trust’s multiple and varied sites. The renewed contract runs until 2026.

“We are delighted to be working with the Trust for another four years,” says Airmec Essential Services managing director Andrew Steel. “It is always a pleasure to be working with Trust managers who recognise that compliance is never just about ticking boxes – it’s a continuous process that is about pre-empting problems.”

The key to water hygiene is regular monitoring through a robust sampling programme, as Andrew notes: “Establishing and continuously reviewing risk assessments, then managing compliance processes, is the lifeblood of successful water safety management. As with many healthcare estates, the plumbing infrastructure within some of their buildings has inevitably seen countless changes and fixes over the years, each one potentially adding to the list of contamination risks.”

Under the renewed contract water engineers from Airmec Essential Services will continue to sample water at 64 of the Southern Health NHS Trust’s 300+ sites. Between them, these facilities provide a complete range of inpatient and outpatient community health services. As well as Gosport’s War Memorial Hospital (pictured), they include Southampton’s Moorgreen Hospital and the hospitals at Romsey and Petersfield, as well as dozens of smaller sites offering specialist outpatient and residential rehabilitation services.

Southern Health NHS Trust contract manager Tracy England commented: “We’ve found working with the team at Airmec Essential Services to be effective and efficient. They know our buildings inside out, the engineers are always on time and courteous, and they carry out the water sampling with minimum disruption on site when they visit.”
